As our population ages, matters relating to ageing have become an increasingly critical issue. From housing and healthcare to financial stability, elder abuse, family dynamics and legal concerns, the needs of the elder person are complex. While mediation is an ideal process to ensure that elder persons receive care, respect, and protection in their decision-making, in my opinion, it is rarely used.

Is it because the needs of the elder person are largely overlooked and minimised by the general population? Is it because ageing in our society is still seen as a weakness? I challenge you to find a gift card that doesn’t represent ageing in a demeaning, shaming, or belittling way.

Elder people face a multitude of challenges, many of which can be overwhelming and emotionally charged. These issues often involve not only the elder person but also their family, caregivers, and healthcare providers. Because of the nature of the ageing brain, it leaves elder people in a vulnerable and exposed space when making decisions about how they will live and thrive in the last chapter of their lives.

Family members may disagree on the best course of treatment. Furthermore, sometimes, the elder person’s autonomy may be questioned due to cognitive decline.
